Pilot Violet Milstead Warren (1919–2014), circa 1943. The Violet Milstead Warren Collection.
Description
Violet Milstead Warren in her British Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) uniform, circa 1943. ATA pilots navigated by sight using a map and compass. There was no radio contact, and pilots would sometimes have to land in fields. Pilots like Milstead were often trained to fly many different aircraft types, from small planes to large bombers. She was the longest-serving female pilot with the ATA.
