Description
On July 1, 1923, the Canadian government introduced the Chinese Exclusion Act, a racist act banning Chinese immigrants. Heritage Toronto commemorated the Act's 100th anniversary on Canada Day at Nathan Phillips Square with a free public event featuring two plaque unveilings and a walking tour tracing the development of Toronto’s early Chinese community on Dundas Street East – a neighbourhood torn down to make way for Toronto City Hall, which was opened in 1965.
The tour was led by a young professional from the community, Jingshu Yao, Programs Coordinator under Heritage Toronto's Equity Heritage Initiative.
