Description
Women picketing at the General Motors plant in
Oshawa, 1937. Deeply concerned with workers’
rights, Croll resigned as Ontario’s Minister of
Labour in 1937 when Premier Mitchell Hepburn
tried to stop General Motors workers forming a
union. “My place is marching with the workers,
not riding with General Motors,” he said. The
workers were ultimately successful in unionizing.
