Sago Palms (Cycas Revolutia) in bloom - Horticultural Gardens, Toronto, Canada, c.1900

Description

Allan Gardens stereoscopic photographs, c.1880s–1900s. The dual images created a basic 3D effect when viewed with a special device called a stereoscope.

The sepia-toned stereographic image depicts a woman standing in a greenhouse, surrounded by lush greenery. She is dressed in a long, white period dress with a high collar and is wearing a brimmed hat. The primary focus is a large sago palm with expansive fronds extending outward, creating a dense and textured backdrop. The greenhouse is filled with various tropical plants. The glass roof and industrial architecture of the greenhouse provide a diffused light that softly illuminates the scene. This is a double image, designed for stereoscopic viewing, with each picture being a mirror of the other.
