Description
This watercolour painting by Owen Staples depicts the Battle of York, which occurred on April 27, 1813, as part of the War of 1812. It details the naval flotilla of 16 American ships approaching the military fort in the town of York, Canada's capital at the time. The battle resulted in a conclusive win for the Americans and the occupation of York. Although this was a major scandal and embarrassment, the battle did not have significant military impact because much of Canada's troops were situated in Kingston, Ontario.
