Description
The Bank of Toronto building, Bay and King Streets, 1913. The Beaux-Arts structure featured 21 fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The arched entries had keystones depicting the Greek
hero Herakles.
The ornate five-storey building contributed to Bay Street becoming a major financial centre. In
1955, the Bank of Toronto and the Dominion Bank merged, resulting in the formation of
Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD).
In 1965, the Bank of Toronto building was demolished for the new Toronto-Dominion Centre, designed
by the celebrated Modern architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
