Description
Interior photograph of The Ward - an area of Toronto that was home to many new immigrants in the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. The area, plagued by poverty, was often referred to as a slum.
Many Black, Jewish, Italian, Chinese, Irish, and Russian immigrant and refugee communities settled in the Ward neighbourhood shortly after arriving in Canada, and lived in poverty and horrendous living conditions. Social programs and public health initiatives were undertaken to improve conditions of the Ward but by the 1920s, redevelopment plans caused much of the mixed population of the community to move elsewhere in the city. The neighbourhood is now part of the Discovery District of Toronto.
