Description
The Upper Canada School of Medicine was organized in 1850. It became the Medical Faculty of Trinity College and continued until 1856 when it was dissolved. Re-established in 1871, this building became its teaching facility. The site was chosen for its proximity to Toronto General Hospital which, from 1856 to 1913, was located just east of here, occupying an entire block on Gerrard Street East between Sackville and Sumach Streets. The Medical Faculty incorporated as an independent medical school in 1877, later changed its name to Trinity Medical College, and granted degrees until 1903, when it federated with the University of Toronto. The building became a mattress factory for several decades and was converted to residential use in the late 1970s.
