Portrait of Wilf Neidhardt, a volunteer nominated for the 2017 Heritage Toronto Awards.
Description
For his demonstrated exemplary service and commitment to the organization, the Heritage Toronto Board is pleased to present Wilf Neidhardt with the Volunteer Service Award. Wilf first came to Heritage Toronto as a founding board member (2000-2007) from Gibson House Museum. During his tenure, he served on the Programs Committee and as Coordinating Chair of the Awards Juries.
Wilf’s enduring legacy will be his contribution to Heritage Toronto’s plaques program. In 2004, Wilf was an instrumental player in the development of the program, working closely with staff to ensure a comprehensive process with clear policies and guidelines. After his Board service, Wilf volunteered for a decade as an active and devoted member of the Historical Plaques Committee (2008-2017).
A respected colleague, he has demonstrated his dedication to respectful dialogue and careful consideration of Toronto’s more complicated historical narratives. As a result, his work has ensured the continued integrity of the program as it has grown exponentially. An educator who spent over 30 years as a history teacher and department head, Wilf’s advice to our emerging historians is to “find a way to both pay your bills, and follow your passion”.
