Description
St. Hilda’s was founded in 1888 as an Anglican women’s college affiliated with the University of Trinity College, once located nearby. At the time, women in Canada had little access to higher education. Located first on Euclid Avenue and then on Shaw Street, St. Hilda’s moved in 1899 to this building designed by Eden Smith. Although Trinity opened its classes to women in 1894, St. Hilda’s maintained its own distinct traditions. In 1904, the University of Trinity College federated with the University of Toronto and in 1925, both Trinity and St. Hilda’s moved to the campus at Queen’s Park. This building became Strachan House, a retirement home. In 1983, a home for the elderly, now named John Gibson House, moved here.
