Description

Interval House, the first formal shelter in Canada for abused women and their children, opened its doors on April 1, 1973, in a nearby house on Spadina Road. At the time, violence against women was seldom discussed and women who left abusive relationships lacked resources and support. The founding of Interval House by a collective of 11 women was a significant milestone in destigmatizing survivors of abuse and advancing women’s rights in Canada. Similar initiatives began in other cities and countries around the same time. The shelter continues to operate at a different location, providing refuge for those in immediate crisis and offering training and resources to help women regain their independence. Over the years, Interval House has helped thousands of women achieve safety and self-sufficiency. Today, hundreds of shelters across the country provide safe haven for women fleeing intimate partner violence with their children.
