Description
Stanley Barracks was a military complex built to replace Fort York. Completed by 1841, it became the new training ground for Canadian and British troops, and was later en-croached upon by the growing Canadian National Exhibition. It served as an internment centre for “enemy aliens” during the First World War, and hosted civilians during a hous-ing shortage after the Second World War. Stanley Barracks was demolished in the 1950s, despite calls for its historical preservation. Only the Officers’ Quarters remains.
