Description
This drinking fountain was built in memory of Dr. William D. Young (1874-1918) by the Beach communities. It commemorates his devotion to public service and to the welfare of the children of the neighbourhood. A physician, Dr. Young worked on Queen Street East and often provided free care to those who could not afford to pay. He died while working during the 1918 influenza pandemic. Architect Maurice D. Klein designed the fountain in the Italian Renaissance style with a statue of a child by sculptor Florence Wyle. Ivor Lewis designed the medallions of Dr. Young.
The Toronto Historical Board restored the fountain in 1977 and replaced the Wyle sculpture, which was stolen in the 1940s, with one by artist Frances Gage.
