Description
Home to one of the first bakeries in Toronto, built in 1847, this property expanded along Yonge and Gould Streets throughout the 19th century, creating space for various commercial buildings. The Empress Hotel, later the Edison Hotel, occupied the corner property until the 1970s, when the block was converted into a multi-level retail space. It featured elements of the Second Empire and Romanesque Revival styles. In 2011, a six-alarm fire destroyed most of the 19th-century building, leaving the site vacant.
