Description
Tour participants at Sick Kids Hospital learn about the history of this world-class institution for childhood medicine that was started in 1875 by a group of women volunteers. Elizabeth McMaster led the establishment of the hospital at a time when women weren’t allowed to study medicine in Canada. She formed a women's committee in 1874 that raised enough money to open the first hospital to serve the city's poor and sick children - a two-story house with six cots and no running water.
