Description
A large group learns about women's history at the Allen Gardens Conservatory. In a horticultural pavilion predating the current one, the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC) was founded in October 1893. Over 1500 women attended that first meeting. The group advocated for social reform, improved education for women, and eventually in 1910 - suffrage - the right to vote.
In 1896, the horticultural pavilion was the site of a mock parliament, organized jointly by the Dominion Women’s Enfranchisement Association and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Women ‘played’ MPPs and debated a bill allowing men to vote; it was defeated.
