Description
In postwar Canada, over 350,000 unmarried mothers were systematically separated from their children through adoption. As part of this practice, the Salvation Army operated a facility here from 1941 to the 1970s that isolated “unwed mothers” and encouraged them to surrender their babies. In the 1980s and 1990s, Bethany Home evolved, becoming a teen parenting centre. In 2018, the Senate of Canada studied forced adoption and released the report The Shame Is Ours.
