Description
A tour group in Mount Pleasant Cemetery stands behind the gravestone of Sir Frederick Grant Banting (1891-1941) and his second wife Henrietta Ball.
Along with his research assistant, Dr. Charles Best, Banting is known for isolating a protein hormone secreted by the pancreas known as insulin.
An altruist, and committed to the advancement of medicine, Banting sold the patent rights for insulin to the University of Toronto for $1. In 1923, he won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery.
Banting was a decorated soldier who served in both World Wars and an avid painter.
