Description
Olga Alexandrovna, a member of the Romanov family and the last Grand Duchess of Imperial Russia, died here in a friend’s apartment above a barbershop. The youngest child of Alexander III, Olga was raised at Gatchina Palace near Saint Petersburg. Her eldest brother, Nicholas II, was executed with his family in 1918 during the Russian Revolution. Olga fled under threat of capture to Denmark with her husband, Nikolai Kulikovsky, and their two young children. In 1948, facing pressure from the Soviet Union to leave Europe, the family migrated to a farm near Campbellville, Ontario, where they lived a modest life: Nikolai raised animals and Olga painted. Increasingly frail, the couple retired to a small suburban home in Cooksville (now part of Mississauga), where Nikolai died in 1958. In 1960, Olga died aged 78 in Toronto following a brief illness, having never returned to Russia. The last person born to a reigning Russian monarch, she was buried in York Cemetery.
