Description
These tombstones come from a military cemetery previously located on Strachan Avenue a short distance west of Fort York.
No register of burials pertaining to the cemetery is known to exist but historical research has identified 97 soldiers, veterans, their wives and children who died between 1862 and 1911. Most burials took place before 1870, when the British army turned Fort York over to the Canadian military. Soon after, the grounds became overgrown and neglected.
In 1922, the Parks Department took over the care of the cemetery, collecting broken grave markers, which in 1970 the Toronto Historical Board mounted in a brick wall.
