Description
This painting from 1913 by J.W.L. Forster (b. 1850 – 1938) depicts Hester How - the woman who in 1881 established a special class for boys in The Ward, a neighbourhood in Toronto that was home to many immigrants. How graduated from the Toronto Normal School in 1866, and is remembered for her kind treatment, yet strength of character, in dealing with boys from the Ward. How was also an enthusiastic philanthropist who began many social programs aimed at educating women and children, and promoted various forms of social reform. She had a profound impact on how the Ontario school system dealt with bringing education to impoverished areas such as the Ward.
