Description
The Malt House is one of several surviving buildings in the Distillery District. Originally this was the site of Gooderham and Worts, who first set up a still to convert surplus grain from an 1832 grist mill into whisky. Exploiting new technologies and commercial opportunities, Gooderham and Worts grew steadily, and a large stone distillery was erected in 1859-1861 and this brick malthouse in c. 1863.
This building demonstrates the Italianate style of architecture, with façade symmetry, corbelled brickwork, pilasters, and pedimented entrance bay.
