Description
During the Second World War, Scarborough was home to the GECO (General Engineering Company) munitions plant. The plant had a mainly female workforce. The women earned a generous $19.60 per week. Between 1941 and 1945, the plant filled 256 million munitions shells with women handling explosives 24 hours a day, six days a week. The plant filled 41 types of fuses or shells. Just one type of shell required 76 different operations to complete.
