Description
The colourful mural in this room, entitled View from Qualicum Beach, was painted in the late 1950s by E. J. Hughes (1913–2007). Qualicum Beach is a town on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The view in the painting is of mainland British Columbia and several islands in the Strait of Georgia. Hughes’ career spanned more than 70 years. He was born in North Vancouver and studied under F. H. Varley and Jock Macdonald at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts (eventually renamed the Emily Carr University of Art and Design), graduating in 1933. After serving in the Second World War, he settled on Vancouver Island. Hughes was best known for his paintings of British Columbia landscapes and seascapes, which he depicted with clarity and vividness through flattened perspectives and simplified shapes.
