Description
The opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959 was an international event. Queen Elizabeth II and the U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower toured the Seaway aboard the royal yacht, the HMY Britannia, before an opening ceremony at Saint-Lambert, Quebec. Many in Toronto saw new business possibilities with the seaway project, hoping new industrial and commercial activities would become possible along the city's waterfront. In the 1960s, the Toronto Harbour Commission moved forward with creating land for an outer harbour area that could further support Toronto’s shipping needs. The area, now known as the Leslie Street Spit, continued Toronto's economic hopes created by the seaway; however, the commission never used this newly created land for port facilities. Today, Tommy Thompson Park takes up most of the area.
