Description
Born in Toronto, Dr. Anderson Ruffin Abbott was the first Black Canadian to become a licensed medical doctor. Like his friend and mentor, Dr. Alexander Augusta, Dr. Abbott felt the need to take part in the American Civil War. Seen here in his uniform, Dr. Abbott worked in hospitals in Washington caring for wounded soldiers.
