Description
The first public school on this site opened in a small wooden building on September 21, 1874. The principal and one teacher taught all 207 students. The junior school was built in 1897 and at first it was only one storey tall. Because the local area grew quickly, the school was soon full. In 1901, two extra storeys were added and by 1917, about 800 students went to Winchester. The school expanded again in 1959 with the opening of the senior school, designed by the school board architect Frederick Etherington. Today, students from the St. James Town and Cabbagetown neighbourhoods go to Winchester. They represent more than 40 countries and speak many languages.
