Description
Toronto's first industry was built on this site in 1793 by the Queen's Rangers on order of Governor Simcoe to mill lumber for the proposed town of York. It was replaced in 1837 by a grist mill built to serve the farmers who settled the cleared lands. The ruins are those of a seven storey mill built in 1848 by William Gamble the first Reeve of Etobicoke. It was destroyed by fire in 1881. R. Home Smith the architect of the Kingsway area began developing the surrounding land early in this century. He built the Old Mill Tea Garden as a community amenity in 1914.
