Mimico Firehall & Police Station Commemorative Plaque, 2013

Description

From 1929 until 1959, this was the site of the Mimico Fire Hall and Police Station. Mimico's development as a railway suburb began in the 1850s when the Great Western Railway was built through the southern part of Etobicoke Township. The community continued to grow after the construction, in 1906, of the Mimico train yard. The Town of Mimico was incorporated in 1917. A year later, the town purchased a one-ton Chevrolet fire engine and established a volunteer fire brigade.

The Mimico Fire Hall and Police Station was designed by the Toronto engineering firm of James Proctor & Redfern Ltd., and constructed by local builder Andrew Crowe in 1929. Among the fires fought by the volunteer brigade was a 1936 blaze that swept through two blocks of the town, destroying the houses of eight families. Mimico's police department had moved to another site by 1959; the fire department remained here until Mimico amalgamated with Etobicoke in
1967
