Description
Born in British Columbia, Selwyn Wilbur "Budd" Sugarman moved to Toronto after serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He settled in Yorkville in 1948 where he established an interior decorating and antiques business on Cumberland Street and later, on Hazelton Avenue. As the neighbourhood evolved into a bohemian area and then a centre of commercial activity, Sugarman fought to maintain its village character. Starting in the 1960s, and until his death, he was an advocate for the preservation of Yorkville's architectural and cultural Heritage. From 1973 to 1991, Sugarman led efforts to transform a parking lot on Cumberland Street into the Village of Yorkville Park. His years of advocacy earned him the unofficial title "Mayor of Yorkville." In 1999, the City of Toronto named this park in his honour. Heritage TORONTO 2016
