York Mills Presbyterian Church Commemorative Plaque, 2009
Description
Circa 1836 On this embankment stood the first Presbyterian church in what later became North York. Originally constructed on James Hogg's property on the east side of Yonge Street the church building was relocated in 1859 to land deeded to the congregation by Andrew McGlashan. By 1885 its members had moved to other congregations and the building was eventually torn down. In 1955 prior to residential development of the site the church's forgotten graveyard was uncovered. The remains of twenty-five early settlers were reburied elsewhere including in a common grave in York Cemetery. Erected with the North York Historical Society.
