Description
The residents of the Toronto Islands have long relied on a boat to travel between their homes and the mainland. Any medical emergency proved especially dangerous, as no hospital facilities were available on the Islands. During the 1940s, the Toronto "life-savers" association often served as an ad-hoc ambulance service for island residents, transporting patients from the islands to hospitals on the mainland.
