Description
Chinese businesses on Elizabeth Street, 1923. From 1885 to 1923 when Canada banned almost all Chinese immigration, migrants had to pay a "head tax" to enter Canada. The tax was extremely expensive; men were often forced to leave their families behind when they came to Canada. This meant the early Chinese Canadian community was mostly male.
