River Don Straightening Plan, Toronto, May 7, 1888. Illustration by Unwin, Browne, and Sankey, P.L. Surveyors. City of Toronto Archives.
Description
The Don Improvement Plan replaced the naturally winding path of the river with a straight channel deep enough to accommodate ships. Expected to be finished in two years, the project was completed in five, and at nearly twice its projected cost.
