Description
A gathering of speakers for the commemorative legacy plaque for Jack White (post its ceremonial unveiling) for a group photo around the plaque. Speakers in this image include: Sheila White (Jack's niece) and Alan White (son of Jack); Steve Neveu (Local Ironworks 721); Andria Babbington, President of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council; Yolanda McClean, Secretary-Treasurer of CUPE Ontario, Lisa Skeete on behalf of the CUPE District Council.
Jack White was the first Black representative for the Iron workers Local 721 and CUPE Ontario. He was also the first Black union steward for the Canadian National Railway in 1944. In 1963, he was among the first Black Canadians to run for provincial office with the NDP. In the 1970s, Jack was the director of social services for the Ontario Federation of Labour. Jack White was pivotal in the Ontario Black Trade Unionists organization.
