Description

One of the oldest streets in the Cabbagetown neighbourhood is Winchester Street, which used to continue down the valley to a bridge over the Don River - called Playter’s Bridge - and connected Cabbagetown to Riverdale. Farmers on the east side of the river used this road to reach the St. Lawrence Market to sell their produce. At the time, Cabbagetown was also a hub for public services: the St. James Cemetery, the Necropolis, the Riverdale Zoo, the Toronto General Hospital, etc.
