Allan Gardens, 1900

Description

Allan Gardens stereoscopic photographs, c.1880s–1900s. The dual images created a basic 3D effect when viewed with a special device called a stereoscope.

The stereoscopic image shows a symmetrical scene of a park with two identical black and white photographs side by side. The foreground features a circular flowerbed bordered with light-colored stones, filled with dense, leafy plants. Behind the flowerbed, there are tall trees with full canopies, providing a backdrop. To the right, a white monument with a figure on top is partly visible among the trees. Two utility poles are seen in the background, adding to the scene's urban feel. The image has a sepia tone, common in historical photographs, and is mounted on a beige card with printed text.
