A common raccoon (Procyon lotor hirtus)
Description
In 1916, wildlife author Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946) worried the loss of wooded areas near water — the preferred natural habitat of raccoons — would threaten these furry mammals. Today, even with the lack of trees, raccoon paw prints (life-size, above) can be found more frequently than ever in the city. Contrary to popular belief, their nimble paws do not have opposable thumbs.
