Grotesques carved to resemble human faces. Old City Hall, February 26, 2025.

Description

Architect E.J. Lennox incorporated several grotesques in his design for City Hall. A common feature of the Richardson Romanesque style, these grotesques may also represent several Toronto City Councillors from the 1890s. According to legend, Lennox used the Councillors' likeness as inspiration for these grotesques when they complained about the building's high cost and lengthy delays.
