Description
For over 100 years, these grounds have been home to the North Toronto Lawn Bowling and Croquet Club.
North Toronto was once a small town on the outskirts of Toronto. In 1912, it was annexed by the City of Toronto, and the area between Lytton and Alexandra Boulevards was developed. Edward B. Stockdale, an investor and lawn bowler, owned this property by 1912.
Stockdale laid the original bowling green and built a small clubhouse here. In 1912 the North Toronto Lawn Bowling Club was created and Stockdale leased the land to the club for $5 a year ($130 in 2022).
The club played in tournaments throughout the city and had both men’s and women’s teams. Stockdale gave the property to the City of Toronto in 1921. The club has occupied the same greens and facilities under agreements with the City of Toronto ever since.
In 1997, the club was joined by croquet players, and its name was changed to the North Toronto Lawn Bowling and Croquet Club. Since then, it has become one of the largest croquet clubs in Canada and is home to nationally ranked players. North Toronto members have represented Canada in international tournaments. The club has received many awards, and its players have been recognized for their worldwide contribution to the sport.
