Description
The School for Nurses was established in April 1881 at Toronto General Hospital. When the school opened, few amenities were available to students. No nursing dormitories were provided nor meals. However, students were provided a beer ration. Initially, the nursing course took two years and was available to those already working in the hospital. The course length was eventually extended to three years in 1896. The School of Nursing was open until 1974, at which point nurses' training was transferred to community colleges.
