Description
James Bain (1842-1908) was a bookseller, publisher, and librarian. Although his formal education ended at age 14, he helped establish and later directed the Toronto Public Library. While there was some controversy at his appointment as Chief Librarian in 1883, during his 20+ year tenure, Bain managed to address tight funding and inadequate facility space to develop what has since become the world’s busiest library system.
