New Hopper Hut Restaurant at Ellesmere and Kennedy, November 14, 2022.
Description
New Hopper Hut is located along the back of a plaza in the Dorset Park neighbourhood. Plazas like these have been vital as meeting places and mercantile hubs, but they hold particular importance to ethnic communities in the suburbs like Scarborough. In plazas, smaller businesses and restaurateurs were able to sell more specialized fare while paying much lower rent, giving these communities centralized areas where they could buy items such as cultural foods, or get essential services from those who spoke their first language. At the Kennedy & Ellesmere Plaza, several communities come together in one large building, reflecting the diversity amongst the residents of Scarborough.
