Description
Several framed photographs adorn the walls of Allen's, including this image of John Maxwell. Born in New York City, Maxwell began his restaurant career in London, England, having moved there in 1968. He eventually became the manager of Joe Allen London, one of the Joe Allen chain of restaurants that started in New York City in 1960. Joseph C. Allen, who founded the chain, became a partner and mentor to Maxwell. In 1980, Maxwell opened another Joe Allen in Toronto, before closing it after five years to open Orso, after one of Allen’s other New York restaurants. He eventually opened Allen's in 1986, named after his mentor.
