Description
Opened in 1889 on a site of a provincial farm, Mimico Asylum was considered progressive for its time. Its cottage system design was meant to create a hospital that didn't feel like an institution. As productive work was considered therapy (and the cost-savings was undeniable), patients built most of the asylum's buildings, as well as tended the orchard and on-site farm.
