Description
Media was invited to a special presentation of Heritage Toronto's first grassroots-funded plaque for soul and R&B singer Jackie Shane (1940-2019). The plaque memoralizes the trans singer and performer who electrified nightclubs and helped define Toronto's music scene and its sound in the 1960s. With the funding target exceeded within weeks due to generous public support, Heritage Toronto fast-tracked the development of our first plaque on a transgender community member to present during Pride Month.
The plaque was installed on the same day at Richmond and Victoria Streets, the former site of the Saphire Tavern, where she recorded her first and only full-length album, Jackie Shane Live!
In addition to the plaque unveiling and photo op, the event featured a special proclamation of Jackie Shane Day by Councillor Chris Moise, and a musical performance by James Baley of Queer Songbook Orchestra.
