Description
Tour participants gather in Yorkville Village Park. Originally home to a row of Victorian houses, this location was a parking lot for decades. The homes were demolished in the 1950s for the Bloor subway line, and while promised a park, residents had to wait a long time - the park opened in 1994.
The park's design represents the popular Victorian hobby of collecting, depicting a collection of Ontario's different landscapes, such as upland forests, marshes, groves, orchards and the Canadian shield. The rock which dominates this park was taken from the shield. It weighs roughly 650 tonnes, and took 20 trucks to get to Yorkville, in pieces. It's estimated to be about 1 billion years old.
