Description
The Ward was a neighbourhood in Toronto, referred to by some contemporaries as a slum, that was home to many new immigrant communities in the late-19th and 20th centuries.
Many Black, Jewish, Italian, Chinese, Irish, and Russian immigrant and refugee communities settled in the Ward neighbourhood shortly after arriving in Canada, and lived in poverty and horrendous living conditions. Many social programs and public health initiatives were undertaken to improve conditions of the Ward but by the 1920s, redevelopment plans caused much of the mixed population of the community to move elsewhere in the city. The neighbourhood is now part of the Discovery District of Toronto.
