Description
Delegates assemble for a photo on the steps of a building at the World's Woman's Christian Temperance Union convention in Toronto in 1897. The WTCU promoted total abstinence from alcohol consumption and saw alcohol as the root cause of many societal issues such as crime, violence, divorce, domestic assault, and poverty. The Toronto branch of the WCTU was formed in 1875 and met at 20 Gerrard St E. from 1912 onward. In 1888, the WCTU became the first major organization in Canada to endorse women’s suffrage.
