Description
Elizabeth Neufeld is photographed with children from the Ward in the first Central Neighbourhood House on Gerrard St. This Toronto neighbourhood in the late 19th century and early 20th century was home to many new immigrants and refugees of Black, Italian, Chinese, and Jewish descent, many of whom lived in utter poverty and terrible living conditions upon arrival in Canada. Neufeld was highly influential in improving the conditions of this area, and helped to establish Toronto's Central Neighbourhood House in 1911. The Central Neighbourhood House provided educational and social programs to children and mothers of the Ward.
